Mississippi Sunflowers Pin
A simple pin for the love of nature
I wanted to design a Mississippi pin that captures natural elements. I had many choices, and I decided to feature earth and sky.
Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, I passed by many fields and farms growing soybeans, cotton, and corn. Even outside of the Delta you'll find forests and acres of grassy lands.
I feel lucky to have grown up around this lushness, so I incorporated a sunflower field in this pin design. Mississippi isn't known for sunflowers, but I chose this plant because it reminds me of the down-to-earth people here.
Above the sunflowers is a blue sky. Mississippi has the most beautiful skies around, especially in the Delta where we enjoy 360-degree sunsets no IMAX theater can match.
Some days our blue skies are covered in white, billowy clouds. Sometimes there isn't a cloud in sight. In the Delta I often see a single yellow crop duster gliding in the spring or hundreds of migrating geese in the fall.
No Mississippi magnolia for this pin
You might wonder why I didn't use magnolias along the bottom of the pin. It's a good question; I designed the magnolia on Mississippi's flag.
For one, magnolia blossoms grow on trees, not stalks. Also, magnolias are very hard to interpret as a graphic. Obviously it can be done, but magnolias would not have worked. They have features that don't translate easily onto a small area. Enamel pins don't handle find detail well. So, sunflowers for the win.
The best things in life are free
This Mississippi pin design is simple, but that's the point. We are blessed with some of nature's most beautiful gifts here in the Magnolia State. Get out and enjoy them. ❤︎
